Health Tips:

Joe Berlino, owner, has tips on exercise, eating and
selecting a health club.

On loosing weight:

Keep it simple.

You didn't go on a diet to gain the weight -- you don't need a stringent diet to loose it.

  • Stay away from fat sugar and anything white, except skim milk.
  • Eat often, every couple of hours, but don't eat until you are full. If you eat until you are full, you ate too much.
  • Drink plenty of water, at least a couple of quarts a day, water has no fat, no carbs, no protein, no calories, but you can't live without it! If you can't live without it, make sure you get enough of it. How did you get there? You ate too much or you ate the wrong food.
  • Plan ahead, set yourself up for success.
  • Have available the right foods in your "bag of tricks"
  • Plenty of water
  • Meal replacement drinks (i.e. slim fast, Special K, Ensure, Lean Shake, etc.)
  • Non-fat or low fat yogurt
  • Diet soda, coffee or green tea
  • Cut your meal portions in half, and when hunger strikes, use your "bag of tricks" and have one item.

On Exercise:

If you are planning on loosing 30 to 50 pounds, you will have to get in-shape to get in-shape!

Because I have been there more than once, and the nice thing about being out of shape is that you don't have to do a lot to have a good workout. You first have to get in-shape to get in-shape!

What may seem like a very hard workout may not be enough to see some quick results. It may take you two or three months to get to a level where you are burning enough calories to shed the pounds on a weekly basis, and then you are really on your way. So don't get discouraged if you don't see quick results at first. But after you get a handle on your eating habits and continue working out to get in better shape you will be loosing weight faster than you ever dreamed.

Rome wasn't built in a day, don't be in a rush, you'll have the rest of your life to be proud of your accomplishment.

Selecting a health club:

I knew Joe Gold, rest is soul, and what made his gym special back in the '60s is that he made is own equipment, he should have patent it like Aurthur Jones did Nautilus, but he was a welder and a body builder, and he got together with his body building friends and made equipment that was never manufactured by any company. And those machines, though primitive, were unique to his gym.

Today, most gyms today all have comparable equipment, except for a few women only franchises, I have no idea what their philosophy is.

I believe if the only thing you are selling is exercise, then you must provide a variety of the best exercise equipment out there. So you won't go wrong with most of the clubs around when it comes to their equipment, but that is not the first or the most important thing to look for when joining a health club.

The most important thing to look for is the atmosphere of the club. I could get in shape in my attic. I was a cellar dweller for ages, I could get in shape in a phone booth if I had to. I can't get in shape in a club, where I am fighting the $99-a-year crowd, waiting for my time on an exercise machine, "oops I missed my turn!" or a club where they have to instruct their members not to be judgmental.

Here at forever Young, we have a friendly, low-key, atmosphere in both the co-ed section and our ladies only section. It is not a big box club or a meat market. We have a respectful atmosphere. The member who eats too much turkey, is respected just as much as the member who won the turkey trot. If you are over weight or feel like you are over-the-hill, you'll feel comfortable at Forever Young, and you can't put a price on that!
